Evangelical homophobe ripped to shreds for comparing same-sex love to ‘marrying a Volkswagen’

An evangelical homophobe who compared marriage equality to wedding a Volkswagen has been mercilessly mocked online.

Frank Wright, an activist with ties to an anti-LGBT+ church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was ridiculed for making the bizarre joke about queer people marrying.

According to the Advocate, Wright compared, er, human beings to cars after the city’s gay mayor, Dean Trantali, honoured the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church on its 60th anniversary last week.

Wright is president of D. James Kennedy Ministries, named after the evangelical who founded Coral Ridge. The Christian media outreach is listed as an anti-LGBT+ hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

So when a local newspaper brought this up while covering Trantali, D James Kennedy Ministries official John Rabe hosted a Facebook Live talk the following day (18 March) with Wright.

Wright sought to rebuke being a “hater” by, well, hating LGBT+ people for more than 30 minutes.

“The destruction of marriage isn’t really about sexuality, it’s a left-wing idea, it’s a Marxist, socialist idea,” he began, before saying that the “destruction of the family [is] step one for overturning the government […] or any form of democracy”.

Thanks for the input, Wright.

“I hate to break it to them,” he added, “but many of our gay and lesbian friends, they’ve just been used by the left to destroy the historic definition of marriage and changed the criteria to only be that of love.

“If two people love each other, or some guy and his Volkswagen, he loves his Volkswagen, he ought to be able to marry his Volkswagen.”

Wright also said there have always been “ex-gays” throughout history, those, he said, who were “in the gay lifestyle and left it”.

“Some of them because they were converted to Christ,” he continued, “we believe first and foremost […] that everyone needs conversion therapy.”

Well, there you have it.

Of course, the strange notion that marriage equality is the same as people getting hitched with their car prompted a backlash on social media.

Some queer Twitter users said they’d happily walk (or is it drive?) down the aisle with their cars, while others questioned why Trantali honoured the church to begin with.
