The much-anticipated lesbian drama film Ammonite starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan is getting a UK release this month.

Despite already being out in the US and Australia, fans in the UK have had to wait much longer for the film.

But it’s been announced that the drama will finally get a digital release from 26 March and will be available to rent on platforms including Amazon Video, iTunes, and Sky Store.

Ammonite tells the story of real-life Victorian palaeontologist Mary Anning, played by Kate Winslet. However, the film adds a queer twist as she forms a speculated romantic relationship with Charlotte Murchison, played by Ronan.

It’s directed by Francis Lee who is best known for his drama God’s Own Country, which explores a gay relationship in the Yorkshire countryside.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Lee said: “I was very drawn to (the Victorian period) because of this wonderful research into same-sex female relationships that are all very well-documented with letters to each other, demonstrating wonderful, life-long, passionate, intense, emotional relationships.

“And I was fascinated to set this film in a period that was totally patriarchal and where women were completely owned by their fathers or their husbands, and looking at how they live within that world, and also in a world where, at that time, the medical profession believed that women had no sexual-pleasure organs.

“So, the idea of two women actually in a relationship together was just not a thought anybody ever had within society.”

Despite being hotly tipped for Oscar success, the film was snubbed when nominations were announced earlier this month.

However it has received a BAFTA nod for Best Costume Design and a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Film.

The film will be released digitally in the UK from 26 March. You can rent it from platforms including Amazon Video, Sky Store, Virgin Media Store and iTunes.

The rental price is currently unknown but is likely to be similar to recent releases that skipped cinemas which has usually ranged from £10-£20.
