Elio’s dad still wants Call Me By Your Name 2 to happen once Armie Hammer scandal has ‘blown through’

Elio and Sami in Call Me By Your Name

Michael Stuhlbarg, who played Elio’s supportive father Sami in Call Me By Your Name, is hopeful a sequel will materialise.

Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino has been teasing a sequel ever since the first film was released. However, the project could be derailed by allegations against Armie Hammer, who has been accused of emotional abuse and of having cannibalistic tendencies. He has denied all such claims.

Stuhlbarg told The Independent that he can’t say much about plans for a sequel just yet, but said that “everybody wants it to happen” and that he believes the storm surrounding Hammer “will blow through”.

“Luca [Guadagnino] has a whole array of projects in front of him. I imagine they’re going to take their time, but I do hope it happens,” he added.

The acclaimed actor also reflected on his experience filming the Netflix biopic Gore, in which he starred opposite Kevin Spacey. The film was ultimately scrapped by the streaming giant after numerous men, including Anthony Rapp, accused Spacey of sexual misconduct.

“I had a wonderful experience making that film,” Stuhlbarg said, “and I do hope some day it can be seen for what it was meant to be. It’s unfortunate, as for what happened, but also for the work – the hundreds of us who put our time and effort into telling that story. I will wait and see what happens.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Stuhlbarg recounted the incredible moment 60 Call Me By Your Name fans descended on him in New York.

The fans, he revealed, called themselves “the Peaches” in recognition of a particularly memorable scene involving the fruit in the 2017 film.

“They wanted to express their thanks for the film but also for the performance,” Stuhlbarg said. “It was like having an enormously warm hug from a bunch of strangers out of the middle of nowhere.”

Call Me By Your Name sequel could be very different to the novel

Speaking in October, Armie Hammer said a Call Me By Your Name sequel was still on the cards, but admitted that a script had not yet been.

He also revealed that he had not yet read André Aciman’s sequel, titled Find Me, and said Guadagnino had his own ideas of where he wanted to take Elio and Oliver’s story next.

Since then, however, Hammer’s career has been put on pause by a series of disturbing allegations.

He has been accused of emotional abuse, of wanting to eat the ribs of an ex-girlfriend, and of etching the letter “A” into another’s groin area with a knife during sex. He has denied all allegations, describing them as “patently untrue”, and has pulled out of multiple acting projects to focus on his family.
