Sony’s epic State of Play has Final Fantasy VII fans frothing at the mouth with excitement

State of Play announcements has Final Fantasy VII fans excited

The latest announcements from Sony’s epic State of Play show have Final Fantasy VII fans excited, to say the least.

Final Fantasy VII Remake, originally released on PS4 last year, is coming to PlayStation 5 on 10 June in an expanded version called Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade.

Available as a free upgrade for existing owners, it’ll feature improved graphics with enhanced effects, a 60fps frame rate (in performance optimisation mode), haptic feedback in the DualSense controller, and faster load times. An already gorgeous game will now look even more stunning, which you can show off in the game’s new photo mode.

What’s more, an extra new episode will be available to purchase for owners of the game on PlayStation 5. It features fan favourite Yuffie in a new story to steal a powerful materia from the corrupt Shinra corporation and looks set to make use of her ninja skills in exploration. She’ll battle with her iconic shuriken weapon alongside new character Sonon.

The news was announced at Sony’s latest State of Play video event on Thursday (26 February). After the event, Square Enix also announced that the game’s soundtrack would be coming to music streaming services, plus two new mobile games: Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, a single-player title covering the events of the original game, and battle royale Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier.

Elsewhere, Kena: Bridge of Spirits was shown in action. First revealed back in 2020, it sees the titular character exploring a beautiful world alongside some adorable little critters known as Rot, with a Zelda influence. It is released on 24 August.

Coming sooner on 30 April is Returnal from Housemarque, a roguelike third-person shooter set in space, in which the planets morph and change for each play through. Deathloop will follow on 21 May, an asymmetric multiplayer game about two assassins that was shown with a stylish trailer and Bond-esque theme song.

Also shown in action was Solar Ash, an action-platformer in an abstract world from the creators of Hyper Light Drifter, and Oddworld: Soulstorm, the latest in the classic Oddworld series that’s due on 6 April.

The only brand new announcement was Sifu from Sloclap, a kung-fu brawler with a unique cartoon aesthetic that’s due later this year.

Finally, there was gameplay of Five Nights At Freddy’s: Security Breach for fans of the expanding horror title, Crash Bandicoot 4 is also coming to PlayStation 5 (12 March), and gameplay for dodgebrawl multiplayer game Knockout City was shown.

This was a great showing for fans of Final Fantasy VII Remake, who are particularly excited for the return of Yuffie.
