Everything we know about the next generation PlayStation VR so far, including headset and design

PlayStation 5

PlayStation VR was originally released back in 2016 for the PlayStation 4. Sony’s first foray into virtual reality, it provided an affordable entry point compatible with existing consoles.

That same headset is also compatible with the PlayStation 5 console, but Sony has announced a next-generation VR system developed especially for the new console is on the way.

Though it won’t be released this year, it’s set to offer “the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity” according to a recent PlayStation blog post.

One major change is the planned single cord setup to improve ease of use. The current VR model is fiddly to get plugged in with multiple wires between the console, headset and TV. That’s set to change with a simplified solution that will make our virtual reality lives so much easier to enjoy.

The headset resolution and field of view tracking will also be enhanced, as well as a high fidelity visual experience thanks to the power of the PlayStation 5.

Sony will also be releasing an innovative new VR controller. It will incorporate a number of features from the PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers (presumably its haptic feedback and dynamic triggers) and will have a focus on great ergonomics. Sony is future-proofing their technology to last as the PlayStation 5 audience grows.

While there’s no word yet on specific games for the next-gen VR system, the technology is already with developers to begin creating new games and experiences.

In the meantime, forthcoming games like After The Fall, Sniper Elite VR, and Humanity are due out soon for the current PlayStation VR system.

Says the blog post: “With both PlayStation VR and the next-generation VR system we’re building, our commitment to virtual reality as a medium for games is stronger than ever.”

Though a relatively niche area of gaming, VR is expected to grow in popularity in the coming years. Competitors like Valve’s Index and HTC’s Vive require powerful gaming PCs to run effectively, while the Oculus Quest is a standalone system with the option of connecting to a PC.

With the large player base of PlayStation consoles, Sony’s current VR headset is by comparison more affordable and accessible at £299 from the likes of Currys PC World, Game and Amazon.
