Modern Love has been renewed for season 2 by Amazon and the cast features openly gay actors.

The romantic comedy series focuses on a different relationship in every episode and it’s based on the weekly column published by the New York Times.

Amazon also confirmed the cast for season 2 which includes openly gay actors Isaac Powell and James Scully. Powell is best known for his role in the Broadway revival of West Side Story and Scully was a main cast member in season two of Netflix’s You.

It’s not yet known if Isaac and James will appear in the same episode, or play gay characters, but we do know that actor Andrew Rannells has written and directed an episode.

The gay actor, best known for his roles in Girls and Prom, has penned one of the season’s episodes that is based on an essay he wrote for the New York Times column, suggesting the episode will focus on a gay storyline.

If Isaac and James are set to play gay characters it will be welcomed by many in the LGBT+ community and beyond following recent debates around straight actors going ‘gay for pay’, including James Corden who’s role in Prom as a camp, gay man was deemed ‘borderline offensive’ by viewers.

This Modern Love news follows on from season one which starred Fleabag’s “hot priest” Andrew Scott as Tobin, a gay man who is about to adopt with his partner Andy, played by Brandon Kyle Goodman.

The pair are matched with an expecting mother who is both nomadic and homeless. She moves into their New York City home as they all try to navigate the upcoming changes in each of their lives.

Scott has previously spoken out on gay actors playing straight roles and vice versa, telling Huffington Post: “There hasn’t been a particularly level playing field with regards to who gets to play what. I can only speak for myself, but I think it’s very important that all of us are able to imagine acting is about being empathetic: what is it like to be in someone else’s shoes?

“So, I think it’s dangerous territory to go down sometimes to think that we’re only allowed to play our own – not just our own sexuality, but our own nationality or identity – that we’re only allowed to… represent things that are within our experience.”

The second season of Modern Love is currently filming in New York and Ireland and is set to be released by Amazon on its streaming platform later this year.

Other notable cast members confirmed for season two include Academy Award-nominated Minnie Driver, Game of Throne’s Kit Harington, Lucy Boynton from Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and X-Men’s Anna Paquin.

The first season which stars the likes of Tina Fey, Dev Patel, Anne Hathaway and Andrew Scott is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video.

There’s eight episodes in total and viewers can sign up to Amazon Prime with a 30-day free trial and then pay £7.99 per month or £79.99 per year. To sign up go to Amazon here.
