Police arrested a 48-year-old woman in Pennsylvania, US, after she allegedly murdered her son Jeffrey “JJ” Bright and sibling Jasmine Cannady.

Jeffrey, a 16-year-old trans boy, and his non-binary sibling Jasmine, a 22-year-old, were found dead in the family home in Ambridge, Beaver County on Monday (22 February)

Police said their mother, Krisinda Bright, dialled 911 after shooting them and waited out on the porch, drenched in dried blood, waiting for cops to arrest her.

She reportedly told investigators that her son Jeffrey begged for her not to shoot him after she shot his sibling Jasmine.

“Please don’t shoot, I’m gonna call the police,” he said according to a criminal complaint, via The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Police sped to the two-story brick property in the 900 block of Maplewood Avenue at around 1:30pm.

There, officers found Krisinda standing outside the property. Concerned cops asked if she was bleeding – she was not, she said. She was covered in the blood of her own children.

“It was a gruesome scene,” interim Ambridge police chief John DeLuca said. Officers had “no issue” taking her into custody, he added.

Krisinda told detectives that she shot Jasmine in bed before going downstairs to take aim at Jeffrey, a student at Ambridge Area High School.

When the gun wouldn’t fire, she “fixed” the trigger before shooting her son in the face, the complaint stated.

Jeffrey survived the initial gunfire. So Krisinda fired the gun again “because she didn’t want [him] to suffer”.

A motive for the killing is not listed in the paperwork.

Krisinda has been charged by authorities with two counts of homicide and is being held at the Beaver County Jail without bond, according to the Beaver County District Attorney’s Office.

LGBT+ advocacy group PRISM of Beaver Country, which Jeffrey was a member of, held a candlelight vigil in honour of the two victims Tuesday evening (23 February). Jasmine, who worked at shipping company FedEx, also occasionally attended PRISM, it is understood.

Framed photographs of the pair, candles and flowers lined the steps of a gazebo at PJ Clark Park.

Jeffrey and Cannady are at least the eighth and ninth trans or gender non-conforming persons violently killed in the US this year.

In less than two months, the community has mourned Tyianna Alexandra, Samuel Edmund Damián Valentín, Bianca Bankz, Dominique JacksonFifty BandzAlexus Braxton and Chyna Carrillo.

The LGBT+ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has warned that the tally is already fuelling fears for the year ahead.

“If this alarming rate of fatal violence persists,” a HRC spokesperson said, “we will either match or surpass last year’s total number of 44 deaths, which marked 2020 as the deadliest year on record for our community.”
