Sarah Michelle Gellar has addressed the long fabled Buffy reboot as the show’s cast continue to speak out against creator Joss Whedon.

A Buffy reboot has been in the works since at least 2018, with Whedon attached as an executive producer.

However, in the wake of allegations that Whedon abused his power on the set of the original series and its spin-off Angel, the new iteration’s future looks uncertain.

When asked by The Hollywood Reporter about the reboot, in an interview that was conducted just one day before Cordelia actor Charisma Carpenter made her allegations against Whedon public, Gellar said she does not know if the project is still happening.

“I don’t have any part of it,” Gellar said. “I wasn’t a producer on that show.”

She went on to say that she “loves” Buffy and the character’s story.

“If there’s more story to be told, I think it’s interesting. Our demons were the metaphors for the horrors of high school and adolescence, and I think that there’s definitely new horrors of adolescence. The idea of a chosen one would certainly [be] very interesting at this time.

“I do think it’s tricky because we were already a reboot. So, I don’t know. I actually don’t know what’s happening with it. I think it’s amazing that so many people are still so passionate about her and her story.”

Whedon was accused by Charisma Carpenter of “abusing his power”, being “callous”, and of “unceremoniously firing” her from the show after she gave birth, alongside a host of other allegations.

Since then, a number of others have come forward to throw their support behind Carpenter and to share their own experiences working with Joss Whedon, with Michelle Trachtenberg claiming she was not allowed to be “alone in a room” with him.

Planned Buffy reboot rests on the shoulders of Joss Whedon.

Rumours have been swirling for years about a potential reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer – but allegations against Joss Whedon could put those plans to bed.

Fans were overjoyed when a Fox official Gary Newman hinted that they were in talks to bring the show back.

“It’s something we talk abut frequently and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with,” he said at the time.

Monica Owusu-Breen was later named as showrunner on the planned reboot, while Whedon joined the project as executive producer. It was revealed the new series would follow a new slayer, who would be a Black woman. However, details about the planned reboot have been scant since it was first announced.
