8 wild, wacky and raucous games to enjoy with your player two this lockdown Valentine’s Day

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Grab your player two and settle in for a night of co-op games this Valentine’s Day.

It doesn’t matter if you’re living together or spending lockdown apart, here’s a list of eight co-op multiplayer games you can play together on the couch or online. Or just grab a bunch of friends for a fun night at any time of year.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Super Mario 3D World

Super Mario 3D World. (Nintendo)

Due out just in time for Valentine’s Day, Super Mario 3D World is a port of the same game on the Wii U for Nintendo’s Switch console. It provides all the colourful and creative Mario platforming you could want and with this new version, up to four players can team up against Bowser’s minions online as well as in local multiplayer. Switch owners: this is not to be missed!

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

For lucky PlayStation 5 owners looking for some local co-op, look no further than the latest adventure from the LittleBigPlanet hero. As you’d expect, it’s an amusing romp through vibrant worlds and it’s entirely playable with up to three other players. There are even specific multiplayer-only levels, so completionists will need to grab a friend for those elusive trophies.

Available on PlayStation 5

A Way Out

A Way Out. (Hazelight Studios)

Where many games have co-op modes as an extra, A Way Out is only playable as a pair. Playing as two criminals who must escape from prison, you must work together in split-screen mode to fight and puzzle your way out in a cinematic game of dual perspectives. Available in both local and online multiplayer, this is one of the best co-operative experiences around.

Available on PlayStation, Xbox and PC

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

If you’re after a calming night in, then try everyone’s favourite lockdown game. Join your partner on their island (or yours) for a spot of fishing, bug catching, and getting to know the local animal villagers. There’s even a Valentine’s Day event including flowers and chocolates with which to adorn your island, or send to a loved one. As the second best-selling Switch game, there’s no better way of escaping reality and revelling in a more peaceful existence.

Overcooked 2

Overcooked 2

Overcooked 2. (Team 17)

Approach this one with caution. Overcooked 2 (and its predecessor) tasks you with creating and delivering delicious meals in increasingly chaotic environments. With up to four players throwing together burgers, sushi, cakes and more and fantastical kitchens filled with hazards and traps, this will either be a wild night in or a recipe for disaster.

Available on Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Nintendo Switch

Destiny 2

Seasonal Praefectus Armor Set

Destiny 2. (Bungie)

The newest season of Destiny 2 just launched, so there’s no better time to start playing! The first-person space shooter went free-to-play back in 2019 so you and your partner can hop straight in with little fuss, create a Fireteam and blast away alien scum in Strike missions. Sadly it’s online co-op only, but if you’re spending lockdown apart this could be just the cathartic experience you need to come together.

Available on PlayStation, Xbox and PC

Fortnite

Fortnite Hearts Wild

Fortnite Hearts Wild. (Epic Games)

Another free-to-play multiplayer shooter, Fortnite is a game you’ve probably heard of. Its Battle Royale mode is hugely popular, can be played alone or as a duo (or squad of up to four), and is available to play across all major platforms. There’s even a Hearts Wild event especially. Scavenge for weapons, build a fortress, and defeat other players in an ever shrinking map – but will you be the last couple standing?

Available on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile

Phogs

Phogs

Phogs. (Bit Loom Games)

This was released just last year and it’s a bizarre one. Phogs is a double doggo puzzle adventure where you and a partner control two ends of a dog with a stretchy belly (yes, that’s right) to solve puzzles through colourful worlds. It’s as wildly surreal as it is adorably fun and is available both online and in couch co-op.
