The Rodgers & Hammerstein version of Cinderella starring Brandy and Whitney Houston is finally coming to streaming services later this month.

Fans will finally no longer find it ‘impossible’ to watch the 1997 remake of the classic story as it will be available on Disney+ from 12 February in the US and 5 March in the UK.

The film follows the classic tale of a young woman who is forced to be a housemaid by her wicked stepmother and sisters. She finds a way to attend a Royal Ball with the help of her Fairy Godmother and friends where she meets a handsome Prince and loses her glass slipper… you know the one.

However this version has been noted as being groundbreaking for its diverse cast which includes a black Cinderella and an Asian Prince who has a white father and black mother.

Released long before the likes of Bridgerton the period piece has become a fan favourite among all audiences for its casting as well as the universal story and songs.

The film was produced by Whitney Houston, who also stars as the Fairy Godmother alongside big Broadway names Whoopi Goldberg and Bernadette Peters.

Plus Rob Marshall choreographed the film before going on to direct hit musical Chicago and the upcoming The Little Mermaid remake starring Halle Bailey as the title character.

Upon its release on ABC in the US it became a huge ratings success and went on to be nominated for seven Emmy Awards as well as inspiring Disney to produce similar music projects.

The soundtrack features songs including “In My Own Little Corner”, “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?”, “There’s Music In You” and of course “Impossible”.

So now that the film is finally available on streaming it might be time to revisit the iconic rehearsal video featuring Whitney Houston and Brandy where Whitney hilariously asks the young singer, “Why are you down there?!”, while they’re practicing singing “Impossible” at around the 3:20 mark.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella will be available on Disney+ on 12 February in the US and 5 March in the UK joining the platform’s “Celebrate Black Stories” collection alongside Soul, Black Is King and Black Panther.
