Elliot Page replaced by Batwoman star Ruby Rose in upcoming Gamergate-inspired eSports film 1Up
Elliot Page has been replaced by former Batwoman and Orange Is The New Black star Ruby Rose after the actor stepped away from an upcoming production.
1Up follows a young woman named Valerie Lee who quits her college eSports team after becoming fed up with the sexism and gaslighting on the team. After quitting the team, Lee discovers she won’t be able to get her scholarship, so she puts together an all-female team of gamers.
The main character will be played by Paris Berelc from Netflix’s Alexa and Katie. Rose will now play professor Parker Nesby, who helps Lee assemble the new team to take down Lee’s former team.
The news came just a day after it emerged that Elliot Page had filed for divorce from their wife Emma Portner, less than two months after the actor came out as trans and non-binary.
Shortly after coming out, sources confirmed that Elliot Page would still play Vanya Hargreeves on The Umbrella Academy, and there would be no changes made to the character.
The role in 1Up is the first Elliot Page has left since coming out, and their subsequent divorce announcement.
Rose was cast as the lesbian superhero Batwoman on the CW show of the same name. The Australian model and actor left the show after one season, but would not confirm the exact reason why.
In a statement, she simply said: “I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season.
“This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”
After Rose left the show, she was replaced by former God Friended Me star Javicia Leslie. Leslie made history when she was named as the first Black actor to play Batwoman, and many media sources reported the star as also being bisexual.
She told Health magazine, however, that she had not yet come out to her mother before she got the Batwoman role.
