Liz Cheney spokesperson mocks Matt Gaetz for carrying a beauty bag: ‘Men don’t wear makeup’

Liz Cheney spokesperson mocks Matt Gaetz for carrying a 'beauty bag'

A spokesperson for Florida congressperson Liz Cheney took a potshot against fellow Republican legislator Matt Gaetz for carrying a “beauty bag” amid attempts to oust her from a key party position.

As efforts to impeach former president Donald Trump strike fierce inroads within the GOP, tensions have flared between Cheney and Gaetz as they jockey over the leadership post in the Florida House Republicans.

Gaetz, one of Trump’s closest allies, has ratcheted up a public campaign to remove Cheney as chair of the Republican conference over her vote to impeach Trump – an act of “betrayal”, Gaetz claimed in a statement – as he plans a rally in Wyoming.

Taking aim in response, a spokesperson for Cheney’s office told the Washington Examiner: “Rep Gaetz can leave his beauty bag at home.

“In Wyoming, the men don’t wear makeup.”

Her spokesperson appeared to be making a not-so-veiled jab against Gaetz over his involvement in HBO documentary The Swamp. In one scene, Gaetz prepares for a television appearance at the Capitol by applying makeup.

Republican Illinois representative Adam Kinzinger, who also voted to impeach Trump, amplified this line of attack. Writing on Twitter: “He literally does carry a beauty bag.”

As Republican rifts deepen over Trump’s impeachment, Liz Cheney faces calls to resign

Cheney, the third-ranking House Republican leader, was one of 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach Trump, a defection that helped bolster it to an upcoming Senate hearing as lawmakers level bipartisan criticism against his involvement in the Capitol riots.

The House of Representatives impeached Trump for “incitement of insurrection” earlier this month, charging him with high crimes and misdemeanours for a historic second time. Members of the House said Trump whipped up a thunderous, violent mob that stormed the Capitol Complex, leading to five deaths.

Some senior Republicans, such as senator Mitch McConnell, have signalled support for the impeachment as a clean way to purge the party of Trump – agitating Gaetz, among other hardline Trump supporters.

With a rally planned for Thursday (28 January) in Cheyenne, Wyoming, with local Republicans to openly challenge Cheney to step down, rumours have mushroomed that Gaetz is out for her post.

“I do not want her job,” Gatez sought to clarify in a tweet promoting the event.

“I unequivocally am not seeking a position in House Leadership. I also know Wyoming can do better.”
