Gorgeous Doritos ad about a dad and his closeted gay son will leave a lump in your throat

A still from the Doritos Mexico LGBT+ advert

A Doritos advert about a father and his gay son has gone viral, bringing viewers to tears of joy over its beautiful LGBT+ storyline based on a real family.

The ad was released by Doritos Mexico before Christmas, but has now found its way to LGBT+ people around the world.

Based on a true story, the ad opens as a son phones his father to let him know he is bringing his “friend Manuel from university” home for Christmas, as he has no one to spend the holiday with.

Titled The Best Gift, the video is narrated by the father, who reads out a Reddit post he is writing asking for advice on letting his queer son know that he is loved and accepted, as he correctly suspects Manuel is more than a friend to his son.

He says: “I am a 52-year-old divorced father and I need help. My son and his friend are a couple and they do not dare to tell me.”

As loving scenes between the two young men are shown, she father says they are trying to be “subtle” but that the relationship is obvious.

They ride a horse together, dance together, and at one point the son orders for Manuel in a diner without thinking.

The father is shown scrolling through the responses on Reddit, and he thanks them for their advice.

The advert ends with the father letting his son know that he loves him just the way he is, and they embrace.

Posting a shorter version of the ad on Twitter, Doritos Mexico wrote: “The best gift you can give this Christmas is to accept someone as they are. #PrideAllYear.”

Social media users were overcome with emotion while watching the video, with one responding: “A little tear came out.”

Another wrote: “Am I crying with a Doritos commercial? I’M CRYING WITH A DORITOS COMMERCIAL.”

Another wrote on Twitter: I just saw the commercial for Doritos Mexico.

“I came out of the closet to my parents five years ago, and although they always had a good attitude, this Christmas my father told me something that he had never told me, and it filled my heart because I never thought I would hear him say it.

“And yes I’m already crying.”

The official Doritos Mexico account responded: “Big fan of your parents, and knowing that so much love surrounds you.”

Doritos Rainbow is a campaign that was started by the crisp brand in 2016 to support the LGBT+ community. It has raised money for queer causes, and conducted workshops for the LGBT+ community.

According to DesignTaxi, Eduardo Córdoba, marketing director at Doritos Mexico, said: “We’re really proud of the accomplishments that have been achieved with Doritos Rainbow.

“We believe the moment is right to show that our commitment extends beyond Pride celebrations every June.”
