Cher has had a powerful affinity with gay men since she was nine-years-old. Here’s why

Cher denied the opportunity to volunteer for the US Postal Service

Cher revealed that she relates to gay people “because gay people don’t feel like they fit in and I never felt like I fit in”, in an interview with CNN‘s Christiane Amanpour.

In the interview, she recalled her introduction to the “gay world” when she was nine-years-old.

She said: “One day I came home and there were these two men in my living room with my mum and my aunt and they were doing their hair and they were talking and I was thinking, why haven’t we ever had these kind of guys around because these guys are like the coolest.”

Cher has long been a gay icon. This summer, she headlined a virtual fundraiser to rally the LGBT+ community to support Joe Biden.

At the event, she performed a reworked version of “Happiness is a Thing Called Joe”.

She told Amanpour she was “very proud” of Kamala Harris’ historic election. Although she added that a female vice president “should’ve [happened] a long time ago.

“Women are great. Women are tough. Don’t screw with them.”

Cher says trans rights

When asked about the trans community, she said she thinks people are “fearful and they just don’t know how to react to it”.

“Some if it’s religious,” she continued. “I’m just not sure why it’s such a big thing. And I try to talk to people on Twitter or people come up to me and I just say ‘just relax and you guys will get through it’. You’ll get through it together.”

The singer’s son, Chaz Bono, came out as trans in 2009. While she described their current relationship as “fabulous”, she also admitted that she “didn’t handle it all that well in the beginning”.

Cher told CNN: “It was very unlike me to in the beginning have a problem with Chaz being gay and it disappeared like that. And then we talked about transgender for many years.”

Ultimately, his happiness helped her to accept the change.

“You have one child but you don’t really lose them. They just are in a different shape. And Chaz is so happy. So, so unbelievably happy.”

Star’s new album may be her last.

Since she announced that she was working on a new “project” earlier this year, fans have been eagerly awaiting her new album.

Cher said it’s “going to be really cool”. She added: “I can’t tell you about it either but no one’s ever done this and I’ve been thinking about it for like ten years.”

The 74-year-old spoke about a recent doctors check-up and he said her vocal cords were like “25 and 27-year-old girl cords”.

However, she fears how long her voice will last. This is why she has predicted this may be her last album.

“You never know when [your vocal cords are] just going to go.”
