Sarah McBride, America’s first trans state senator, shares touching memory of Joe Biden and his late son Beau

Sarah McBride shared a heart-warming story about Joe Biden and his late son Beau Biden as he was elected president.
The Delaware state senator-elect, who will become the most powerful transgender politician in America upon her swearing-in in January, has known the Biden family for a decade through her lengthy career in politics.
In 2010 McBride worked on the re-election campaign for then-Delaware attorney general Beau Biden, the late son of the new president-elect.
“When I came out [as trans], Joe Biden told me, ‘Beau is so proud of you’,” McBride tweeted Saturday (November 7), following Biden Sr’s victory.
“Today, Mr. President-elect, Beau is so proud of you. We are all so proud of you.”

Beau Biden served as Delaware attorney general until 2015, when he announced he would not seek a third term in order to run for state governor the following year. Sadly, he died later that same year from brain cancer.
Joe Biden was elected the 46th president of the US after a long, tense campaign, and a similarly nail-biting count.
McBride’s victory was called much sooner, with her win announced at midnight Wednesday (November 4).
Currently the national press secretary of the Human Rights Campaign, McBride has played a pivotal role in the fight for LGBT+ discrimination protections in Delaware, and has lobbied for the Equality Act to extend protections nationwide.
In her victory speech, she said: “It is my fervent hope that tonight a young person here in Delaware or in North Carolina or in Texas or anywhere in this country, that they are able to go to sleep tonight with a powerful but simple message: that our democracy is big enough for them too, that their voices matter and that change is always possible.”
Annise Parker of LGBTQ Victory Fund said: “Sarah’s overwhelming victory is a powerful testament to the growing influence of transgender leaders in our politics and gives hope to countless trans people looking toward a brighter future.
“Throughout this election cycle, Donald Trump and other cynical politicians attempted to use trans people as a political weapon, believing they could gain popularity by stoking fear and hate.
“For Sarah to shatter a lavender ceiling in such a polarizing year is a powerful reminder that voters are increasingly rejecting the politics of bigotry in favour of candidates who stand for fairness and equality. Her victory will inspire more trans people to follow in her footsteps and run for public office.”
