Lady Gaga tearfully celebrated Joe Biden’s triumph in the US presidential election Saturday (7 November), expressing her relief that the “terror and aggression” felt under Donald Trump has come to an end.

Between tears, the Chromatica singer said in an Instagram video: “I hope all the women know in this country that there is a real reckoning and a real change.

“I hope people whose voices who have been oppressed by power, I hope you know your voices were heard.”

As her voice began to crackle, it was something that Gaga, who had become a high-decibel supporter of the president-elect’s by delivering empowering speeches, had certainly not experienced in weeks: “I’m speechless.”

Lady Gaga: ‘You can feel warm now.’

“This is a very special day,” Gaga said. “A day when a lot of people who have felt like we were living in a state of terror and aggression all the time – and it’s over.

“You can feel warm now. I love the world so much and this is so good for the world. I feel the world just got a big hug from God.

“Go home and hug your families and hug yourself and may we all stitch ourselves back together after all this. Be safe and be peaceful. There’s no need to gloat in anybody’s faces that Joe won.

“There’s no need to be unkind – this is just a time for healing and a time for rest and a time for love.

“The people have spoken.”

Gaga also sought to shine the spotlight to Kamala Harris, a barrier-breaking prosecutor who has become the first Black female vice president, as well as Stacey Abrams, a Black politician vastly credited pulling Biden ahead of Trump in Georgia by inspiring 800,000 new voters.

“Thank you so much to everybody that voted and thank you so much, Stacey Abrams – all the work you did in Georgia. You’re such an inspiration to so many people.

“Send her and her team all the love that they deserve, and the respect, and all that realness and authenticity – it shines so bright through that state.”

Gaga then admitted she was having difficulties putting her sense of relief and joy into words, showing the camera that she was tuning in to CNN’s rolling coverage of the results.

She later tweeted a note that touched off the overwhelming sense of respite the election had provided the nation: “Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and the American people, you just gave the world one of the greatest acts of kindness and bravery humanity has ever seen.”
