Cher has torn into Donald Trump after the United States president alluded to “herd immunity” during a town hall event.

The legendary singer, who has thrown her weight behind Joe Biden in an effort to elect the Democratic nominee in November, lashed out at Trump over his comments at the ABC event in Philadelphia on Tuesday (15 September).

When asked about the idea of herd immunity – the notion that suggests society would eventually become immune to COVID-19 after enough people have contracted the virus – Trump replied: “Sure, over a period of time. Sure, with time it goes away. And you’ll develop – you’ll develop herd – like a herd mentality.”

Trump continued: “It’s going to be – it’s going to herd-developed, and that’s going to happen. That will all happen. But with a vaccine, I think it will go away very quickly.”

Cher slammed Donald Trump for alluding to ‘herd immunity’ in the fight against COVID-19.

Cher shared a news story about Trump’s comments on Twitter and slammed the United States president for promoting herd immunity, saying it could result in thousands of deaths.

The singer shared the article, which was titled “Trump touts ‘herd immunity’ that experts warn would kill millions”, and lambasted the president for his approach to the pandemic.

“Seems [two] hundred thousand dead isn’t enough carnage, misery [for] Trump,” Cher wrote.

“We MUST BE AWARE when he starts this insane treatment. We must protect ourselves and those who will surely [die],” she added.

The “Believe” singer went on to suggest that Trump wants to use “herd immunity” as a “treatment” for COVID-19.

“This means no one tries [to] protect themselves in ‘ANY WAY’. EVERYTHING OPENS LIKE [BEFORE] COVID.”

She suggested that the number of deaths in the United States would skyrocket if Trump were to pursue a “herd immunity” tactic.

Cher went on to urge her followers to wear a mask, follow social distancing guidelines, and – most importantly – she told them: “MUST VOTE AND LIVE,” referencing November’s presidential election, which will be the American people’s first chance to oust Trump from the White House since he was elected in 2016.

The singer, whose last album was a collection of ABBA covers, recently headlined a virtual fundraiser for Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Speaking on the fundraiser, which raised more than $2 million for the Biden campaign, Cher praised the Democratic nominee’s track record on LGBT+ rights, and asked voters: “Do you believe in life after Trump?”
