Actor Neil Patrick Harris has revealed that his whole family tested positive for coronavirus, but are now “feeling good”.

The former How I Met Your Mother star told Today that he, his husband David Burtka, and their nine-year-old twins Gideon and Harper had all contracted COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic.

He said: “It happened very early [in the pandemic], like late March, early April.

“We were doing our best before, and I thought I had the flu, and I didn’t want to be paranoid about it.

“And then I lost my sense of taste and smell, which was a big indicator, so we holed up.”

Harris, 47, confirmed that six months later they are all “feeling great”, and added: “It was not pleasant, but we got through it and have antibodies and are feeling good.

“We want to make sure everyone’s doing their best to slow this down every way possible, for sure.”

Now that he and his family have recovered, Harris said he was celebrating the release of his new children’s book The Magic Misfits: The Fourth Suit.

He said: “I wanted to write books that my kids would like, but I also wanted to write books that other types of kids would like, so for me, I wanted diversity of families of all kinds to be a part of the book, but not the part of the book.

“Diversity in families is important.

“Everyone in the books have different families, whether it be their actual families or adopted families or their friends who are their family.

“I think right now in a divisive world it’s nice to have things that kids especially can relate to, and read, and regardless of their circumstances, feel like they have an in.”

Neil Patrick Harris previously insisted he has ‘no interest’ in being a gay icon.

Last year Neil Patrick Harris, who married his husband David Burtka in 2014, insisted that he had “no interest” being a gay icon or a representative for the LGBT+ community, and that he wanted to focus on his family.

He told the Associated Press, he said: “I’m just a guy who is married to another guy and we have kids and we live our lives I would say as ‘normally’ as one would. But I think normal is a very subjective term, especially in the gay community.

“I legitimately have no interest in being a representative or an ambassador for anything except my kids.”
