Gina Carano, who appears in the Star Wars series The Mandalorian, has been criticised after adding “boop/bop/beep” to her Twitter profile in lieu of pronouns.

The Mandalorian actor and former MMA star was accused of “mocking trans people” with the update, prompting calls for Disney Plus to remove her from the series.

Carano, who plays Cara Dune in the Star Wars spin-off, added “boop/bop/beep” to her profile after fans asked if she would display her pronouns as an act of trans solidarity.

Though all people – cis and trans – have pronouns, the act of sharing them on social media bios and in person has been popularised by trans and non-binary people hoping to avoid being misgendered. Many cis people do the same to support the trans community.

Carano acknowledged that this convention had been explained to her by Mandalorian co-star Pedro Pascal, whose pronouns are displayed in his Twitter name.

“Yes, Pedro and I spoke and he helped me understand why people were putting them in their bios,” she tweeted Saturday (September 12).

“I didn’t know before but I do now.”

Despite this, Carano insisted: “I won’t be putting them in my bio but good for all you who choose to”.

She painted this as a decision to “stand against bullying” and to uphold “the freedom to choose”.

Hours later Carano explained “after months of harassing”, she had decided “to put three very controversial words” in her bio.

“I’m not against trans lives at all. They need to find less abusive representation,” she argued.

Carano denied being transphobic in a second tweet.

“Beep/bop/boop has zero to do with mocking trans people [heart emoji, and 100 per cent] to do with exposing the bullying mentality of the mob that has taken over the voices of many genuine causes,” she wrote.

When one follower asked if she could see “how some would read that as mocking”, Carano ignored the question.

Instead, she replied: “I don’t think trans people would like all of you trying to force a woman to put something in her bio through harassment and name calling EVERYDAY for MONTHS.”

Many were quick to rebut her argument, explaining that regardless of her intent, her actions had upset many trans people.

Carano’s actions come after she was criticised for suggesting COVID-19 regulations were a form of oppression and for retweeting an inflammatory anti-Black Lives Matter video.

Together, these controversies have led to calls for Disney to drop Carano from The Mandalorian.
