Transparent star Trace Lysette joins Trans in Trumpland docuseries exploring the impact of the president’s transphobia

Former Transparent star Trace Lysette

Transparent and Hustlers star Trace Lysette is executive producing a new trans-led documentary series about existing as a transgender person in Donald Trump’s America.

Trans in Trumpland, a four-part documentary series directed by trans filmmaker Tony Zosherafatain, follows four trans people fighting the tide of hatred as the Trump administration works to roll back equal rights protections.

In a statement to Variety, Lysette said: “I’m excited to join this brilliant trans-led team and to showcase the resistance and resiliency of our trans siblings during this trying time.

“I hope this series can make a difference and that we can look back on this period in the future and be proud of the fact that we always find a way, we always push through against all odds.”

Beloved transgender activist Miss Major Griffin-Gracy is also signed on as an executive producer.

A synopsis states: “Trans in Trumpland investigates the impact of anti-trans policies on the lives of four transgender Americans.

“Told through a road trip narrative across remote parts of the United States, the film explores the transgender experience in politically hostile states. Set against the backdrop of increasing rates of transphobic violence, Trans in Trumpland will show the grim realities that trans Americans face.”

Production on the series was completed in 2019, focusing on “authentic trans stories in Idaho, Texas, North Carolina, and Mississippi”.

Trans in Trumpland crew seek to portray ‘powerful’ transgender stories

Of its origins, the documentary’s website explains: “Since the day Trump was elected to office, the crew behind Trans in Trumpland has been brainstorming ways to portray transgender stories through the medium of film.

“After two years, Trans in Trumpland was conceptualised: a powerful documentary that will investigate the inequalities that transgender Americans face.”

It’s not yet clear where the series will air.

The new documentary follows hot on the heels of Netflix’s Disclosure, helmed by Orange is the New Black‘s Laverne Cox, which addressed the legacy of trans representation in media.
