Stars of Netflix’s queer epic The Old Guard reveal their touching hopes for the inevitable sequel

The stars of Netflix’s new queer action movie The Old Guard have expressed their hopes for the sequel.

The film, adapted from Greg Rucka’s graphic novel, stars Charlize Theron as the leader of a small cohort of immortal vigilantes.

Viewers have praised the way the film handles its diverse, queer characters – including the immortal gay couple Joe and Nicky, played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli.

The couple are at the core of the film – with one stand-out scene spotlighting the eternal nature of their relationship.

So far, no sequel has been announced, but there are several positive signs – not least the film’s strong performance on Netflix, a twist ending that sets up a new plot arc, and Rucka’s already mapped-out framework for a trilogy of graphic novels.

The Old Guard 2 could already be in the works.

Speaking to Gay Times, Kenzari and Marinelli opened up about what they hope Joe and Nicky might be in the sequel.

Marinelli said: “Always together.”

Kenzari added: “I’m as curious as you are, in terms of what the graphic novel brings.

“I would be happy in any way, I guess, but I would be interested in seeing their relationship as it started, to have a little flashback and go back in time. At the same time, I would like to see what would happen if they lose each other.

“But then again, the story is so profound and so well made, that I’m very curious to find out what happens next.”

Marinelli added:  “I will be ready! I will be ready next week. I think it will be a fantastic opportunity to go deep and study more of this story and these characters.”

Netflix stars ‘proud’ to take on genre-busting LGBT+ action roles

The pair also spoke about their pride at starring in one of the only action films to have spotlighted LGBT+ characters.

Marinelli said: “I’m very proud of this opportunity to play this role and to be Nicky, to play with Marwan and to deliver this fantastic story of love. It’s such a powerful love.”

Kenzari added: “As an actor, you wanna do stuff that is original and authentic and in this case, I’d personally never seen anything like it before.

“There are these movies that I consider to be fantastic LGBT+ movies like Brokeback Mountain or Philadelphia, where you can see these people express their love for each other. In this case, I thought it was an amazing combination to have characters like this that have great fight sequences and are able to break someone’s arm!

“I was really proud of it.”
