A trans person was stoned and bottled by teenage thugs in a suspected hate attack, for the simple crime of walking their dog

Police are investigating a suspected “transgender hate attack” after a gang of teens on bikes viciously pelted a trans person with a bottle and stones.

The incident took place on June 22 as the victim was walking their dogs to a parade of shops in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham.

They were approached by up to eight teenagers on bikes, said to be aged 13 and 14, who shouted abuse at them. As they reached the shops in Boundary Road, Streetly, the teens began throwing a bottle and stones, one of which struck the individual in the head.

A spokesman for the West Midlands police force said: “We are investigating an assault on a person who was walking their dogs outside a shop in Boundary Road, Streetly on Monday, June 22 between 5pm and 5.30pm.

“It is understood that a group of white youths, aged 13 to 14, shouted abuse before throwing a bottle and stones, one of which hit the person’s head. Enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing for witnesses to get in touch.”

A witness claimed the teens recorded the attack as well as a separate one that took place in January. The police are interested in speaking to anyone who has seen or been forwarded these two videos.

CCTV from the area is being checked and any local residents or business owners with footage of the attack are asked to pass it on to officers.

In addition to this, police are looking into another incident in which abusive messages were sent to the trans victim.

“We are also investigating an allegation of a malicious communication being sent to the same person,” a police spokesperson confirmed. “Both incidents are being treated as transgender hate crimes.”

Anyone with information about either incident can contact police via their live chat function, quoting the crime reference number 20WS/145090Q/20. Those wishing to remain anonymous are encouraged to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
