Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair reunited some 21 years after Cruel Intentions – the film that genuinely opened with a Placebo song, mind you – to recreate that iconic kiss for Blair’s 48th birthday.
With its flawless 1990s-era outfits that inspired more than two decades-worth of Halloween outfits, the 1999 film about a nasty love triangle ended up winning big at the MTV Movie Awards.
Stars Gellar and Blair, who played Kathryn and Cecile respectively, defied heteronormative expectations by passionately kissing in the film, sparking years of recreations whenever the pair would meet up.

They even recreated the smooch at the MTV Movie Awards, which Gellar reflected on June 24 as she wished Blair a happy birthday on her Instagram account.
“Since I have to stay six feet away from you today,” the 43-yer-old wrote, referring to coronavirus social distancing regulations, “(and wear a mask) this will be as close as I get to giving you a birthday kiss.
“Happy birthday, Selma Blair.”
But the Buffy The Vampire Slayer actor later updated fans that she “got my kiss” with Blair. She shared a photograph on her Instagram stories of the pair, Gellar wearing a diamante lips face covering, and Blair kissing her.

It’s certainly not the first time the duo have redone the kiss, having been best pals since meeting on the set of the cult teen drama.

As much as Geller and Blair recall their time on the film fondly, Cruel Intentions‘ syndication since as, at times, been mired by controversy due to the lesbian kiss scene.
Some broadcasters have given the memorable LGBT+ scene the cut, often sanitising its more sexual themes.
Moreover, a televised spin-off of the film was shelved by NBC in 2016. So, for now, we will simply have to learn to live with these recreations and the screenshots of Ryan Phillipe’s nude scenes which made many men realise they were queer.
