Anderson Cooper has welcomed a baby boy, announcing the birth of his son Wyatt Morgan Cooper on live on CNN Thursday night (April 30).

In a broadcast on Anderson Cooper 360°, the news anchor shared the happy news that his baby son was born at the start of the week.

“I want to share with you some joyful news. On Monday, I became a father,” he said.

Smiling, he added: “I’ve never actually said that out loud and it still kind of astonishes me.

“I’m a dad. I have a son and I want you to meet him.”

He shared a photo of his son, Wyatt, named after his father who died when Cooper was just 10

Anderson Cooper’s baby named after his parents.

Anderson Cooper, who split from his long-term partner two years ago, went onto explain that his baby’s name is also a tribute to his late mother, the fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt.

He said: “My son’s middle name is Morgan.

“It’s a family name on my mom’s side. I know my mom and dad liked the name Morgan because I recently found a list they made 52 years ago when they were trying to think of names for me.”
Cooper continued: “As a gay kid, I never thought it would be possible to have a child, and I’m grateful for all those who have paved the way, and for the doctors and nurses and everyone involved in my son’s birth.”

Gay news anchor chokes up as he thanks baby’s surrogate.

Cooper choked up as he thanked the baby’s surrogate mother, her partner and family, as well as medical professionals who, in the throes of coronavirus, helped deliver him.

He added: “I do wish my mom and my dad and my brother Carter were alive to meet Wyatt.

“But I like to believe they can see him. I imagine them all together, arms around each other, smiling and laughing and watching, looking down on us, happy to know their love is alive in me and Wyatt and our family continues – new life and new love.”

Fellow dad Andy Cohen congratulated Cooper, writing on Instagram: “‘New life, new hope’, Wyatt Cooper, you could not have come at a better time.

“I know a friend who can’t wait to meet you!”
