Oil prices plunged below zero for the first time in history and for some reason it reminded people of RuPaul
For the first time in history, the price of a barrel of US oil has dropped below zero – and Drag Race fans can’t help themselves with the RuPaul jokes.
With pandemic-induced national lockdowns keeping a huge swathe of the world’s population indoors, oil producers are now resorting to storing the excess oil that they can’t sell in offshore tankers.
“This is off-the-charts wacky,” energy expert Stewart Glickman told the BBC, in a phrase that could’ve come from the Drag Race judging panel itself.
Which is just as well, because joking comparisons to RuPaul followed the news of oil’s downfall faster than the price of a barrel had just plummeted.
But for some, news of the historic drop in the oil price was the first they’d heard of RuPaul’s fracking empire.
“The most important thing I learned about oil prices today is that RuPaul was involved in fracking? Missed this story the first time around,” one person summarised, speaking, no doubt, for many.

It was –unbelievably – just one month ago that we learned of the Drag Race star’s relationship with the fracking industry.
When the queers learned that RuPaul was not just fond of making transphobic statements, but also fond of contributing to the Earth’s demise, it was a lot to handle.

Speaking to NPR, RuPaul had revealed that he and his husband, Georges LeBar, lease “mineral rights” to oil companies on their 600,000 acre ranch in Wyoming.
“That’s like a national park!” host Terry Gross exclaimed when hearing the size of Ru’s ranch, before asking him what he and his husband do up there.
“A modern ranch, a 21st-century ranch is really land management,” Ru said, “you lease the mineral rights to oil companies and you sell water to oil companies, you lease the grazing rights to different ranchers.
“It’s land management.”

“That sound you can hear in the distance is RuPaul screaming at the state of his fracking retirement fund right now,” one Twitter user wrote.

Similar to the disbelief we’ve been enduring around 2020 managing to be a worse year than 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016 put together, many people openly admitted that they did not see this coming.
“You tell me 2020 has RuPaul fracking and negative oil prices I wouldn’t have believed it WOULDN’T HAVE!” another person shared.

But perhaps the most important political take on the news came in the form of a Twitter thread (of course): RuPaul as fracking rigs.
