Schitt’s Creek creator Dan Levy reveals that the series finale was meant to have a very different ending

Schitt's Creek finale

Schitt’s Creek co-creator and star Dan Levy has revealed that the series finale was originally meant to have a very different ending.

The hit show came to an end last week after six groundbreaking seasons and showed David Rose finally marrying his boyfriend Patrick in a beautiful, heartfelt ceremony.

But that wasn’t always the plan for the final moments of Schitt’s Creek. Originally, Levy and his co-writers had planned that David’s sister Alexis would be the one tying the knot.

Alexis Rose, played by Annie Murphy, was all set to marry her longtime boyfriend Ted Mullens in the show’s finale. But, while writing the fourth season, Levy had a change of heart.

Dan Levy thought Schitt’s Creek would end with Alexis marrying her boyfriend Ted.

“I think that was a decision that was made during season four,” Levy told TV Guide.

“The more that [their] story played itself out, the more that that story felt like it was about personal growth for both of them, and not necessarily a wedding.”

While David’s story ended with him marrying the love of his life, Alexis instead saw her relationship with Ted come to a heartbreaking end during the show’s sixth and final season. The pair split after Ted got a job on the Galapagos Islands.

The more that [their] story played itself out, the more that that story felt like it was about personal growth for both of them, and not necessarily a wedding.

“A wedding would almost not be what I’d want for them,” Levy continued. “I want them to live bigger and bolder than they ever had.

“In order to do that, it felt like they had to take that next step on their own.”

While Alexis didn’t get to have her own wedding in the show, she did get to walk down the aisle. In a touching moment in the series finale, she gave her brother away – but committed a fashion faux pas when she wore a white dress to the event.

Alexis and Ted could ‘maybe’ get together again in an imagined future.

Speaking about Alexis and Ted’s break-up, Levy said it was “one of the more special moments in our entire series.”

“I haven’t seen a break-up that really celebrated a relationship in the way that scene did and gave people closure at the same time.”

All hope is not lost for Alexis and Ted. When asked if he could see them getting back together in an imagined future, Levy said: “Maybe”.

“If and when I get around to thinking about what could potentially come next for these people, it’s definitely something to consider. But who knows?” he added.

Levy has previously hinted that the show could come back for a reboot at some point in the future – but for now, Schitt’s Creek has officially come to an end.
