It was widely reported last week that an Italian mayor had banned orgies, threesomes and gang bangs to stop the spread of coronavirus, but it turns out it was all a hoax.

A photo of an announcement supposedly from the mayor of Bugliano, Italy, was posted on Twitter last week and spread quickly across the internet.

Mayor Fabio Buggiani’s office appeared to have declared: “As an additional measure for coronavirus containment, orgies and gang bangs are forbidden throughout the municipal territory of Bugliano.”

It added that the penalty for group sex acts such as orgies would be a fine of €875 (£800).

But there were some clues in the proclamation that it might not be genuine.

QNews reported: “A quick examination throws up two clues that the announcement possibly requires more investigation.

“Firstly the date on the proclamation seems early for a coronavirus response — 9 February.

“Secondly, the number 69, especially in association with anything of a sexual nature, usually indicates a joke. The proclamation is numbered 00069/2020.”

The Twitter account which originally posted the photo has also been responsible for other prank announcements.

In one, the mayor “announced” that Bugliano residents would now be able to hunt for meat, so as not to overcrowd the grocery stores.

In another, a ban on smoking in public buildings was suspended, and the mayor was quoted as saying: “Smoking will hinder the spread of the virus. This according to the opinions of the homeopathic doctor Mantrugiani and the tobacconist Ampelio.”

Other sex-related coronavirus misinformation has been circulating online in recent weeks.

The idea that masturbation could boost the immune system and prevent coronavirus has been debunked.

Gail Saltz, an associate professor in psychiatry at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill-Cornell School of Medicine, told Health.com: “To my knowledge, no study says specifically that masturbation boosts the immune system in a way that prevents or helps fight off infection.”
