Lady Gaga’s PAPER magazine cover shoot is a bigger contribution to art than Warhol, da Vinci and the Dutch Masters combined

As the students took to their seats, the teacher told the class to open their art textbooks to page nine. “Art is dead,” the teacher said, “rip your books, dear children, and look ahead and gaze in the glory of Lady Gaga covering PAPER Magazine.”

The children did as the teacher asked. There, the overhead projector showed the “Stupid Love” singer on a panelled stage, countless spotlights hooked into her techno-human body.

Gaga graced the publication ahead of the April 10 launch of her first solo album in four years, Chromatica.

And art was never the same.

Lady Gaga to collaborate with ‘fellow female pop star’ for Chromatica album.

The holy hitmaker, who invented the ability to hear in 2008 so the masses could listen to “Just Dance”, gave a candid insight into her kaleidoscopic artistic process and what the shoot, snapped by Frederik Heyman, is seeking to communicate.

It’s all part of the magazine’s “Transformative” issue, which Gaga is essentially the definition of.

The issue can be pre-ordered here.

Gaga insisted she doesn’t “like futurism for the sake of it”, and noted: “I’ve been obsessed with the future for so long, going, ’What’s next?’

“And then I turned back and looked at my life. I unpacked all the things I’ve learned that have helped me and that have hurt me, and that taught me infinitely more.

“Now, [the past] informs my work.

“It’s like I was blocked because I was so obsessed with what was next, what was coming, what does it mean to go forward, that I didn’t realise I was already in the future.

“And where we are, where we stand in the present, is powerful.”

In other words, Gaga invented the future. We owe all that the future will bring us to the singer, including knowing that what the future does hold is her hotly-anticipated Chromatica Ball tour.

Other things in our future are a collaboration between Gaga and a “fellow female pop star” who, Gaga said, has experienced trauma in the public eye like her.

Rumours have raged around Twitter that the upcoming partnership will be with none other than Ariana Grande.

“I sat with her and we talked about our lives,” Gaga explained.

“It’s two women having a conversation about how to keep going and how to be grateful for what you do.”
