A lesbian in South Africa has reportedly been the victim of a violent rape by teenage boys who tried to “correct” her sexuality.

The woman, who has not been named, was walking in Cape Town, South Africa on February 28 after 10pm when she was approached by a man she knows, the Daily Voice reports.

The man told her that somebody wanted to talk to her in a house in Duiker Avenue. She went with him to the house where she was allegedly gang raped by three men.

The lesbian was allegedly raped by the three men in an effort to ‘correct’ her sexuality.

Two of the perpetrators are still teenagers and are aged just 14 and 17, local reports suggest.

Grassy Park station commander Colonel Dawood Laing said one of the rapists put his arm around the woman when she went to the house and told her he was in the mood for sex.

The three attackers – who are members of the area’s Dog Pound gang – allegedly raped the woman before they finally allowed her to leave.

That night, the woman returned to her family home but discovered that her family was asleep. She waited until morning before reporting the crime.

“She went to her girlfriend who called the police and a case was registered,” Laing said.

We condemn all violence against women and children and this rape will not go unpunished as they specifically preyed on a lesbian woman.

“She was taken to the hospital and officers went on the hunt for the suspects on Monday morning.

“They found two of the gangsters, aged 14 and 17, while the third suspect is on the run.”

The colonel said the community and local police are appalled by the crime and insisted they will do everything they can to bring the men to justice.

“This is a horrific crime,” he said.

“We condemn all violence against women and children, and this rape will not go unpunished as they specifically preyed on a lesbian woman.”

He said the third alleged perpetrator is known as “Boofie” and asked anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact Cape Town police.

‘Corrective rape’ is a violent act used against queer people across the world.

“Corrective rape” is a horrific and violent act that is still used in parts of the world in an effort to change a queer person’s sexuality.

The term originated in South Africa following the high-profile rape cases of lesbians such as Eudy Simelane and Zoliswa Nkonyana.

“Corrective rape” cases have been recorded in countries across the world, including Ecuador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Thailand, Ukraine, the UK and the US. The deeply harmful and violent practice is considered a hate crime for its focus on changing queer identities.
