Miriam Margolyes has described what it’s like to be a lesbian in the best possible way, explaining that she doesn’t feel “groin excitement” when she looks at men.

Margolyes who is known for the Harry Potter series and more recently for her role in Call the Midwife, made the comments in an interview with The Guardian where she discussed her sexuality.

The actress revealed that she got her first girlfriend when she was 27-years-old, the same year she came out to her parents. She said her attraction to women felt like a “bombshell” when it happened.

“I used to have crushes [on women] and they were incredibly passionate and all-consuming,” Margolyes explained.

Miriam Margolyes says she doesn’t feel ‘groin excitement’ when she looks at men.

“I wasn’t really interested in men and I’m still not – I’m not interested in their souls, because very few men have souls. When you find one that has, it’s worth it. Most of them are just so trivial. And if you’re not sexually interested in men, they’re unbearably trivial.”

She continued: “I can like [men] and have my male friends, but I just don’t feel groin excitement from them.”

Elsewhere in the wide-ranging interview, Margolyes spoke about the devastating experience of coming out to her parents at the age of 27 in the late 1960s, and the pain she felt when they did not accept her.

“It hurt them too much and it didn’t please me particularly, so I think it was an error,” she said.

She added: “I knew I couldn’t change what I was; I was just unhappy that I told them. But I told them because my relationship with my mother was completely open – we had no secrets from each other.”

The actress said she is ‘thrilled’ to be a lesbian.

However, she insisted that she was “thrilled” to be a lesbian, saying it gave her “an identity”.

“It put everything into place. And it was fun. I still think it’s an absolutely terrific thing to be, which is good, because it’s not going to change.”

The actress also opened up about her 52-year relationship with an Australian academic. When asked if she is still attracted to her partner, Margolyes responded: “I don’t get wet when I look at her, if that’s what you mean.”

She continued: “I don’t feel physical lust, but I feel mental lust. I love talking to her, and I suppose my happiest moments, really, are just lying in bed with her and looking at the ceiling and talking. That’s my big joy.”
