Grimes has been dubbed “an icon” after revealing that she and her partner Elon Musk will allow their baby to discover their own gender identity.

The 31-year-old singer announced that she was expecting a baby in January, and has said that she is now seven months pregnant.

In a Twitter Q and A, Grimes was asked by a fan: “You will have a girl or boy?”

To which she responded: “They may decide their fate and destiny.”

While some accused her of “denying science” by not forcing a label onto her child before it has even left the womb, most agreed that she was “an icon”.

One Twitter user wrote: “Lucky child! To be able to grow without the pressure of society’s limited stereotypic walls impinging on their human potential…. Awesome!”

According to Peopleduring a YouTube livestream on Friday, February 21, Grimes expanded on why she wouldn’t be publicly gendering her baby any time soon.

She said: “I don’t want to say the gender of the baby … because I feel like their privacy should be protected.

“I don’t think they can consent to being famous or being in public. And I don’t want to gender them in case that’s not how they feel in their life.

“I don’t know, I just feel like it doesn’t need to be known.”

During her YouTube livestream, Grimes was also asked if she had chosen the baby’s name.

The Delete Forever singer said: “I have a name for the baby, but I don’t want to say what it is because everyone I’ve told it hates it, and everyone’s gonna make fun of it.

“But it is, in fact, a genius name and people just don’t appreciate it yet because it’s too avant-garde.”

Society’s obsession with knowing the sex of unborn babies has become so extreme that even the woman who started the gender-reveal party trend has said she now regrets it.

Saying that she felt “like the guy who invented gunpowder”, Jenna Myers Karvunidis added: “With the gender-reveal you’ve isolated one aspect of this person. “When it gets elevated as being central to your identity that’s problematic.”
