Margot Robbie has said she believes her character in Bombshell will “end up with a woman”.

The actor plays fictional Fox News producer Kayla in the drama, which is based on the real-life downfall of disgraced network boss Roger Ailes.

One scene in the film sees Kayla hook up with Jess – a closeted Democrat on the network played by SNL‘s Kate McKinnon – before continuing to deny that she is LGBT+ because of her diehard conservative beliefs.

Right after the two have sex, Kayla insists that she is “not a lesbian”, lamenting: “My parents would be horrified if I went home with a Democrat.”

In an interview with Variety, Robbie spoke about portraying the internal conflict within Kayla.

She said: “She’s just slept with a woman! I wanted to deliver that completely genuinely, not being ironic, not being sarcastic.”

Actor wants Bombshell spinoff about queer bipartisan romance.

Robbie quipped: “I secretly want a spinoff movie where Kayla and Jess go on a road trip with their opposing political views and their blossoming romance.”

The actor explained that the character “compartmentalises” her attraction to women, adding: “She is not going to acknowledge it until she’s 60.”

Robbie also revealed that she has an entire future for the character mapped out in her mind, explaining that the character will go on to have several marriages to men – before finding “the woman that she eventually leaves them for”.

She continued: “Jay [Roach, the director] was probably a little surprised, but entertained by that, I’m sure.

“I was like, ‘I know this doesn’t come into play in the movie, I just need to know what happens to Kayla.’

“A character always starts off as just this bit of writing on the page, and then by the end of it, she’s such a real person to me.”

Margot Robbie and Kate McKinnon put their real-life chemistry to use.

Speaking to PRIDE about the storyline previously, Robbie said: “I did SNL a little while ago, so Kate and I had met before and worked together in that space, and I felt like we just clicked immediately, and we had chemistry so readily there.

“It was so fun to have that relationship with Jess and Kayla, especially because I really think it was built on friendship.”

She added: “I could talk for an hour about how much I love Kate.”
