The Marvel Cinematic Universe might be introducing a same-sex couple sooner than we thought

Blu Hunt and Maisie Williams in The New Mutants from Marvel

The New Mutants is heavily rumoured to feature two characters in a same-sex relationship, who could go on to become the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first queer couple by default.

Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) is set to star in the upcoming superhero horror as Wolfsbane, a mutant “struggling to reconcile her religious beliefs with her power to turn into a wolf”.

As the film nears release following two years of development limbo, it is heavily rumoured that the final cut will see Wolfsbane in a queer relationship with another mutant: Moonstar (The Originals‘ Blu Hunt).

If true, this would make The New Mutants only the second Marvel film to feature a same-sex couple after Deadpool 2.

Like Deadpool, The New Mutants was produced as part of Fox’s X-Men series.

It was the last to be made by Fox before Disney acquired all of its assets, paving the way for the X-Men characters to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It is rumoured that as a precursor, New Mutants has dropped all references to the previous X-Men continuity in case Marvel wants to make the film part of the MCU canon.

Marvel revving up for more LGBT+ representation…

While Marvel has confirmed that it will eventually fold the X-Men characters into the MCU, for now the studio is gearing up for the release of The Eternals.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that the film will introduce the first openly-gay superhero in Phastos (played by Brian Tyree Henry).

In an interview with Good Morning America in August, Feige said the character would be “married, he’s got a family, and that is just part of who he is.”

…but not trans characters.

In late December, Feige sparked a flurry of optimistic headlines when he appeared to confirm that trans characters were on their way to the MCU.

At a New York Film Academy Q&A, Feige was asked whether he had plans to bring “more LGBT+ characters into the MCU, specifically the T, trans characters.”

“Yes, absolutely, yes,” he replied. “And very soon. In a movie that we’re shooting right now.”

Days later, sources clarified that Feige had only meant to answer the first part of the question, and did not mean to suggest that a trans superhero was incoming.
