Piers Morgan tells Ruth Davidson how he voted in the general election and it’ll come as little surprise

Piers Morgan has revealed who he voted for in last year’s general election, and it won’t come as much of a surprise.
In an interview with lesbian former leader of the Scottish Conservative Party Ruth Davidson on LBC Radio, Morgan revealed that he – gasp – voted for Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party.
Unsurprisingly, Morgan chose not to address Johnson’s track-record on LGBT+ rights – which includes calling gay men “tank-topped bum boys” – nor did he mention the Conservatives’ troubled history with the LGBT+ community.
Instead, Piers Morgan explained that he voted for Johnson’s Conservative Party not because he loves the party, but because he loves democracy.
“I voted to Remain and I would vote to Remain again – I’m not a great fan of Brexit – however, I am a much bigger fan of democracy,” he said.
“To me, Boris Johnson was the only major party candidate who was offering to honour democracy and to respect the fact that 17.4 million people had voted to leave the European Union,” he added.
“When I went to my ballot box, I was crystal clear – and I’m often not, actually – I’ve voted Conservative and Labour over the years, and the Animal Welfare Party, but on this occasion I was quite clear.”
He added: “It was a clear cut case of democracy being more important than any individual personal party.”
Piers Morgan said Boris Johnson is ‘a very charismatic guy’.
While Morgan claimed that he does not have “great love” for Johnson, he went on to heap praise upon the prime minister.
“Boris Johnson has got something about him,” he told Davidson. “He’s a very charismatic guy. I’ve known him a long time. I like him personally. He’s got his flaws, but most great leaders have flaws. And what Boris quickly worked out in this election was that the simple mantra of ‘Get Brexit Done’ was going to win.”

He went on to tell Davidson that working class people voted Tory because they, like him, just love defending democracy.
Morgan doesn’t seem to have given much consideration to which party had the best track-record on LGBT+ rights when choosing who to vote for. This will be particularly unsurprising to any queer people who have watched Good Morning Britain recently, where he has persistently targeted, mocked and denigrated trans and non-binary people’s identities.

Late last year, the television host seemed to become somewhat obsessed with Sam Smith, who is non-binary. He repeatedly hit out at the star, even mocking them for wearing clothes from a menswear line.
Morgan also made headlines when he said he identified as a “two-spirit penguin”. More than 33,000 people signed a petition calling for him to be sacked following the comments.
Given Morgan’s Good Morning Britain performance, it is thoroughly unsurprising that LGBT+ rights were not at the top of his agenda when considering who to vote for. Sadly, the election result suggests that he was not alone.
LGBT+ rights were apparently not a major issue for most voters who overwhelmingly opted to put Johnson back into Downing Street despite his refusal to apologise for calling gay men “tank-topped bum boys”.
Nobody is suggesting that democracy isn’t important – but it’s frustrating that in 2020, LGBT+ rights are still a priority for so few.
