Lil Nas X, Lizzo and Billie Eilish lead the way with Grammy nominations

Lil Nas X holding two MTV Awards

Lil Nas X has been nominated for six Grammy Awards, including record of the year for ‘Old Town Road’ and album of the year for 7.

The rapper is tied with Billie Eilish for second-most Grammy nominations, just behind Lizzo who leads the pack with eight nods.

All three artists will vie for the biggest gong of the night, record of the year, going up against Ariana Grande, Bon Iver, H.E.R., Khalid, Post Malone and Swae Lee (nominated jointly).

They will also battle for album of the year, as well as for best new artist and song of the year.

The latter will see them going up against three other queer artists: Lady Gaga, for her A Star Is Born Track ‘Always Remember Us This Way’, Brandi Carlile, up for her single ‘Bring My Flowers Now’, and Jesse Saint John, a songwriter on Lizzo’s ‘Truth Hurts’.

Lil Nas X has also been nominated for the best pop duo/group performance, best rap/sung performance and best music video categories.

The 20-year-old responded to the news in typically pithy fashion.

The nominations come a week after he became the first out gay man to win a Country Music Award.

He took home the musical event of the year trophy for his ‘Old Town Road’ remix, which became the longest-running US number one in history in July.

The Georgia-born rapper came out as gay on the last day of Pride month, June 30, of this year.

“Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care,” he tweeted.

In an interview with Time magazine, he later said that he was “pushed” to come out by the universe.

“In June, I’m seeing Pride flags everywhere and seeing couples holding hands–little stuff like that,” he said.

“I never would have done that if I wasn’t in a way pushed by the universe.”
