Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez quoting Lady Gaga to Sasha Velour is the most ambitious – and gayest – crossover event in history

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sasha Velour

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez referenced Lady Gaga’s iconic “talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing” rant while meeting Drag Race winner Sasha Velour and a new queer icon was born.

Since establishing herself as a major progressive force in US politics, Ocasio-Cortez has also emerged as a leading LGBT+ ally and queer pop culture stan.

In between defending the rights of trans people and rallying against toxic masculinity, the Democrat has found the time to pop up at New York drag shows, record messages of support for eliminated Drag Race queens, and now, join forces with drag royalty Sasha Velour to form what can only be described as the Avengers of gay rights.

Velour shared a video of the pair backstage at her Smoke & Mirrors show in Washington, DC, writing that the lawmaker had been “THE most honoured special guest”.

The clip sees Ocasio-Cortez gushing over Velour, telling her: “It was amazing, it was incredible, it was fabulous.

“I’m like that Lady Gaga moment, stunning, amazing, impeccable, genius.”

The Democrat was, of course, paraphrasing the viral clip of Gaga describing American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy as “talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, s** on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it”.

Her impeccable knowledge of gay culture was not lost on Velour, who laughed: “Can you believe… from the revolutionary of our time.”

Writing on Facebook, Velour said that Ocasio-Cortez won a standing ovation from the Smoke & Mirrors audience.

“You are truly an inspiration AOC,” they wrote.

“Thank you for all you do to support our queer family. What a brilliant human, I’m still overwhelmed from this meeting!”

Fans were similarly excited about the team-up, calling Sasha Velour and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez “icons” and “two of the greatest queens”.

“Another step in the journey of the House of Velour changing the world, love to see it,” read one Facebook comment.
