There are many rituals lesbian couples can choose from to include in their wedding ceremony, but doing a tandem deadlift usually isn’t one of them.

But this is exactly what lesbian couple Lisa Yang and Wek Hernandez – who are both Olympic weightlifters – decided to do during their wedding.

The sight was one to behold for guests at the wedding, which took place several weeks ago in Brooklyn. Yang and Hernandez completed the deadlift together in their white wedding dresses. In the photo of the lift, one of the bridesmaids can be seen looking on in horror.

Standard wedding rituals did not represent who the lesbian couple are.

“We thought about the usual candle lighting, tree planting, sand pouring, and none of those things represented Wek and I,” Yang told Women’s Health.

“We were joking about doing a tandem deadlift. At the time, it seemed ridiculous because we’re Olympic weightlifters, deadlift isn’t even our main sport. But a snatch or clean-and-jerk in dresses might be a bit dangerous, so we settled on three deadlifts.”

Meanwhile, Hernandez said that the deadlift at their wedding was an important statement for them.

“Individually, we are strong, capable women, but together we are stronger,” she said.

“I was just so happy and in the moment,” Hernandez continued. “I mean, we were deadlifting in Prospect Park in wedding gowns and professing our love. It was awesome!”

The incredible photo has been liked more than 1,000 times on Instagram.

The couple are passionate about fitness and about weightlifting in particular. They are part of a weightlifting team in Brooklyn, with Hernandez saying they are like family.

The photo was shared on Instagram by Hernandez as well as by photographer Eileen Meny. Between both posts, the photo has been liked more than 1,000 times.

Writing on Instagram, Hernandez said: “Cheers to the most amazing day of my life.

“A giant thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all those who came to celebrate our love. It was a good time,” she continued.
