Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci to play gay couple in upcoming love story about dementia

Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci play gay couple in upcoming film about dementia

Gay filmgoers, brace yourselves: Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci are set to play a couple in an upcoming film – and it sounds like a tearjerker.

Supernova follows gay couple Sam (played by Colin Firth) and Tusker (played by Tucci) as they journey around England in an RV visiting friends, family and places from their past.

The couple’s journey is an important one as it comes just two years after Tusker is diagnosed with early onset dementia, Variety reports.

However, their journey becomes even more complicated when old secrets emerge and the strength of their relationship is put to the test by illness.

Supernova is a ‘deeply romantic, modern love story’.

The film is the second feature from director Harry Macqueen who won acclaim with his debut film Hinterland in 2014.

The film was shot in just six weeks in England’s Lake District and recently wrapped filming.

It is an intimate, naked portrayal of a relationship facing a fissure that threatens to cut it to its very core.

Macqueen – who also wrote the film – said Supernova is a “deeply romantic, modern love story”.

“It follows two people who are bound together by their love for each other but being pushed apart by the situation they find themselves in. It is an intimate, naked portrayal of a relationship facing a fissure that threatens to cut it to its very core.”

News of the film has had quite the reaction online, with many people coming forward to express their excitement at the prospect of Firth and Tucci sharing the screen.

Both Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci have played gay characters on screen before.

While both Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci are straight in real life, both have played gay characters on the big screen.

Firth was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for his turn as a depressed gay university professor in A Single Man.

He also played Harry in the Mamma Mia films, who is either gay or bisexual.

Meanwhile, Tucci has played various gay characters in films such as The Devil Wears Prada and Burlesque.

Firth has previously spoken out about some of the challenges facing gay actors, noting at the UK premiere of A Single Man that gay actors face “risks” in coming out.

“If you’re known as a straight guy, playing a gay role, you get rewarded for that. If you’re a gay man and you want to play a straight role, you don’t get cast – and if a gay man wants to play a gay role, you don’t get cast.”

He also admitted that he feels “complicit” in the problem.

“I don’t mean to be. I think we should all be allowed to play whoever – but I think there are still some invisible boundaries which are still uncrossable.”
