Netflix’s She-Ra and the Princesses of Power will be welcoming its first non-binary character, voiced by the gender non-conforming writer and activist Jacob Tobia.

They will be playing the role of shape-shifting, non-binary, reptilian mercenary Double Trouble in the upcoming fourth season of the animated show.

The Emmy-nominated She-Ra reboot is based on the popular 1980s spinoff character from Masters of the Universe.

The inclusive show has been praised for featuring several LGBT+ characters. Tobia told Deadline that it was a dream come true to add yet another one to the show.

“Having non-binary representation in animated shows for young folks is just so vital because young people today are already understanding that gender is diverse and a broad spectrum from a super early age,” they said.

“It’s about time that the shows that we’re making for young people reflect the world as they understand it.”

Tobia’s character hails from the Crimson Waste and will joins forces against She-Ra with Catra and the Horde. They are described as a ‘thespian’ at heart and are able to magically transform themselves into any person they see.

“Fantasy has always been so vital to me because as a non-binary person, it’s a way of escaping the confines of the world we live in,” Tobia said.

“It’s the way of building other realities and imagining the world as it could be, not as it is.”

Tobia announced they were joining the She-Ra cast in an Instagram post to their fans, joking that the role was fabulous for them because “I’m just playing myself”.
