Elsa will not have a girlfriend in Frozen 2

Fans have been campaigning for Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend since the release of Frozen in 2013, but a Disney songwriter has said she won’t have a romantic interest in the sequel.

Many in the LGBT+ community saw ‘Let It Go’ as a coming out anthem, and when a trailer released in February showed a glimpse of a new character, it fuelled rumours that it could be Elsa’s long-awaited girlfriend.

If Elsa had come out, she would have been the first queer Disney princess and even Idina Menzel, the voice behind ‘Let It Go’, said she was supportive of the idea, but it was not to be.

“Like the first movie, Elsa is not just defined by a romantic interest,”Frozen 2 songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez told IGN.

“There’s so many movies that define a woman by her romantic interest. That’s not a story that we wanted to tell at this point in time.

“What we really wanted to tell was if you have these powers, how do you grow and change and find your place in the world and find answers that haven’t been found before?”

Unsurprisingly, Elsa’s huge LGBT+ fanbase were upset.

Others were happy with the decision, saying that Elsa not being a princess that relies on anyone else was important.

One Twitter user said: “I definitely feel like they can still make her LGBT+ but without having to give her a love interest, like just her hinting at it or referring to it because I do love how she doesn’t have a love interest! It’s refreshing.”

“Maybe in Frozen 3 or in a related project they can give her a girlfriend, but I literally don’t think we should be focusing on her love interest,” said another.

“I want lesbian Elsa, hopefully we get it, but this is actually a really good outcome/decision imo by Disney.”
