Halsey owned the VMAs red carpet with her rainbow hair

Halsey arrived at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) in Newark, New Jersey, last night with an amazing rainbow parting – and fans loved it.
The openly-bisexual singer was nominated for six awards, including artist of the year and best video for good for ‘Nightmare’. She didn’t bring any awards home, but the BTS song she featured in, ‘Boy With Luv’, won the award for best K-pop.

She wore a sheer floor-length dress by designer Peter Dundas, before making an outfit change into a rainbow, marble, cut-out dress, and, while she was on the red carpet, proclaimed: “I’m always kind of naked, kind of classy.”
But her rainbow striped parting stole the show, with one fan writing on Twitter: “Halsey having a whole rainbow part is really getting me thru the week.”
Other fans saw the style as a political statement “during a time when the government is trying to actively take away LQBTQ+ rights”.

Halsey chose not to attend the VMAs last year.
Halsey did not attend the VMAs last year, criticising MTV for using the “woman crush wednesday” hashtag to highlight her work without nominating her for any awards.
She wrote on Twitter at the time: “I directed all my own music videos this album just to have MTV ‘#wcw’ me to death and not nominate me for anything so it didn’t feel right to go.
“I’m happy you guys liked the videos. That’s all that matters to me.”

Halsey won the title of outstanding music artist at the 2018 GLAAD Media Awards, and spoke about her experience of being a bisexual woman in a video message, as she was unable to attend.
She said: “I spent the past year and the year before that working really hard to be a better representative of the LGBT+ community.
“I’m a young, bisexual woman, and I’ve spent a large part of my life trying to validate myself — to my friends, to my family, to myself — trying to prove that who I love and how I feel is not a phase.”
