Texas daycare centre turns away child for having two mums

Lesbian couple whose child was denied a daycare place

A child has been denied a place at a daycare centre in Texas because she has lesbian parents, one of her mothers has alleged.

Brittney Ready said the daycare centre of Parkview Christian Academy in Waco, Texas, told her that they could not welcome her daughter Callie after finding out that she and her wife were “mates.”

Ready wrote in a public Facebook post on Thursday (July 18): “Parkview Christian Academy denied an innocent child today due to the choices of her parents.”

She said that the centre informed Ready and her wife that they had an opening for their daughter, and that they went to meet the school’s director who was initially “sweet and welcoming.”

She continued: “We go to leave with paperwork in hand only for the administrator to call us into his office to let us know that he heard that Stacey and I are “mates” (first off we aren’t animals) and because of that they cannot welcome her (Callie).”

Callie’s mother said: “We are gay, our daughter is not”

The Christian school’s “childcare and preschool handbook” states that they make “reasonable accommodations to fit all children into the program,” and that they do not discriminate “in regard to sex, race, colour, disability, or national origin.”

The handbook does not reference discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or religion.

“We were not trying to plague your daycare sir, WE ARE GAY, our daughter IS NOT,” Ready’s post continued.

“Our child born in a Catholic hospital, at the hands of a Christian doctor, our innocent child of God.

“I am glad God was on our side and let the true colours show before my baby was subjected to their ‘discriminating beliefs.'”

According to local TV station KCEN News, the couple are also Christian, have four children and have been married for two years.

Since the news broke of Callie’s rejection from Parkview Christian Academy on social media, other local daycare centres have reached out to offer her a place.
