Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recorded a video message for RuPaul’s Drag Race star Nina West.

The progressive New York congresswoman posted a message to her Instagram story on Saturday (May 11) after catching up on the latest episode of Drag Race, which saw Columbus, Ohio queen Nina West sent home in a divisive lip sync.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez praises Nina West: ‘Know how important you are’

In the clip, the Democratic lawmaker paid tribute to Nina West, who is a major charity fundraiser and LGBT+ campaigner in Ohio.

She explained: “I don’t always get to watch Drag Race on Thursdays when it comes out, I have to catch up on the weekends because work is insane, and I just caught up and I am so sad.

“No spoilers, but but to the queen that went home this week, just know how important you are to the bigger picture, and I’m so proud of you and your fundamental kindness and goodness.

“I’m really looking forward to watching you grow. You’re amazing, and I’m sad, but I’m excited for you.”

The congresswoman also shared an article on Twitter in which Nina West talks about her philanthropy, having raised $2.5 million for LGBT+ causes.

Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: “In our house, we name a Queen of Hearts @NinaWest that is YOU!

“Thank you for being a relentless example of kindness, consciousness, compassion, and courage.

“Thank you for using your gifts to focus on voices + issues that deserve all the shine and elevation in the world. ️‍ “

The congresswoman has alluded to her love of Drag Race previously, tweeting at RuPaul in January: “Mother Ru, thank you for your shining example of loving ourselves in our entirety, no matter what the world thinks. You give me hope and strength every day!”

She has also adopted Drag Race queen Monique Hart’s catchphrases, “Facts are facts, America.”

Fans want Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to guest judge on Drag Race

Naturally, fans are already questioning whether Ocasio-Cortez could be convinced to make an appearance as a guest judge on a future season of Drag Race.

LGBT+ ally Nancy Pelosi appeared as a guest judge on the third season of Drag Race All Stars, while several British MPs have expressed their interest in appearing on spin-off Drag Race UK.

During her appearance, Pelosi offered advice and guidance to the drag queen elite.

She told them: “People sacrifice so much in our country for people to have the right to vote.

“It’s a blessing. But we have to use it. If you don’t vote, you don’t count — and you count.

“I’m honoured to be here. You’re an inspiration, I hope you know, because you really know your power. It’s about taking pride, and that’s what you do.”
