The Broadway cast of last year’s The Boys in the Band revival—who are all openly gay—are set to reunite for a film adaptation of the famous queer play.

The play was revived last year to mark its 50th anniversary after it debuted off-Broadway in 1968. The revival was a huge success and had a limited run from May until August.

Now, producer Ryan Murphy has announced that the cast will be getting together this summer to make a film adaptation of The Boys in the Band for Netflix.

Murphy announced that the whole cast from last year’s Broadway production will be returning for the film adaptation. The cast includes Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington, Robin de Jesús and Tuc Watkins.

“Last summer, The Boys In The Band were on Broadway, breaking house records at The Booth,” Murphy wrote on Instagram. “This summer, The Boys In The Band will be filming a Netflix movie event.”

“The Broadway cast of BOYS was so important to me, and as equally groundbreaking as Mart Crowley’s seminal work. Everyone in the cast was out and proud… and feeling so blessed to mark the 50th anniversary of Mart’s landmark play.”

He also revealed that the film will be directed by Joe Mantello, who also directed last year’s Broadway revival.

The Boys in the Band was considered groundbreaking when it debuted off-Broadway in 1968 for its representation of gay men.

The play tells the story of a group of gay men who gather for a birthday party in New York City and are forced to face some uncomfortable truths.

It was made into a feature length film in 1970. Like the play, the film is often cited as one of the most important cinematic depictions of gay men.

This is not Ryan Murphy’s first foray into working with Netflix. Earlier this month, he revealed that he was teaming up with the streaming giant to create a film adaptation of queer musical The Prom.

The out creator of record-breaking trans-themed show PoseGlee and American Horror Story made the announcement on Tuesday (April 9) at New York’s Longacre Theatre, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The musical is about a lesbian teenager in Indiana whose high school prom is cancelled after she asks a girl to the event.
