Love, Simon TV series coming to Disney+

A still of gay rom-com Love, Simon, whose sequel will inform a new TV show on Disney+.

A TV show adaptation of Love, Simon is coming to Disney’s new streaming platform.

A sequel to the 2018 gay teen rom-com has received a straight-to-series order from Disney+, TV Line has reported.

While the source material for the film was Becky Albertalli’s 2015 novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, the TV show will be based on her follow-up to the hit book, Leah on the Offbeat.

The sequel focuses on Leah, Simon Spier’s best friend, as she deals with teen issues like self-confidence, body image, friendship and love.

13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford played Leah in the film, but the TV show will reportedly have a new cast.

Director Greg Berlanti is also not expected to return for the TV show, as he has an exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Television.

Love, Simon enabled people to come out to loved ones

The film, which was about coming of age as much as it was about coming out, prompted multiple people to reveal their sexuality.

Nick Robinson, who played the rom-com’s main character, revealed last year that his brother came out as gay while he was filming Love, Simon.

Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the actor said that while he played a teen who overcame struggles with his sexual orientation to accept his sexuality, his brother did the same.

“He came out around the same time we started filming.”

“I think that he had been dealing with this for a long time and the timing was coincidental, but one of the best things that came out of this movie was being able to talk to him.”

“I think that’s the strength of a film like this is that it starts conversations, and I hope it can do that for more people and start a conversation that might not have been there,” added the star.

Love, Simon also led a mother to finally, tearfully, accept her bisexual daughter’s sexuality.

The story went viral on Twitter last year after 18-year-old Jade detailed her four-year journey from battling prejudice and attempts to make her straight all the way to tears of joy.

In the thread, which has received more than 92,000 retweets and likes, Jade recounted how “Love, Simon gave her a glimpse on how hard it is to accept yourself as someone in the lgbt+ community.”

She added that “tonight my mum has accepted me more than she ever has.”
