Coronation Street‘s Dolly-Rose Campbell has revealed that she is bisexual, explaining that Manchester Pride helped her to “be proud of who I am.”

Campbell, who plays Gemma Winter in the hit soap opera Coronation Street, is also taking on a role as an ambassador for Manchester Pride, reports the Daily Star.

The 31-year-old actor told the Daily Star: “I have been coming to pride for over a decade now.

“The love and acceptance shown by the people of Manchester allowed me to accept my bisexuality and be proud of who I am.”

Campbell added: “The work that Manchester Pride does throughout the year to engage with and create opportunities for people in Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community and beyond makes a huge difference to so many people’s lives.”

Campbell has also provided the voiceover for Manchester Pride’s new advert promoting the festival set for the August Bank Holiday weekend later this year.

Coronation Street, meanwhile, has featured a number of LGBT+ storylines over the past year, including a lesbian muslim and a male rape plot line.

At last year’s Manchester Pride, Coronation Street stars Nicola Thorp and Antony Cotton took a stand against anti-gay protesters during the parade.

Manchester Pride organisers recently came under fire for more than doubling the price of tickets to the weekend festival—despite no line-up being announced—as the event is moved from its iconic Canal Street site.

Pre-sale tickets to access Pride festivities, including a music festival and events in the Gay Village, were released on the morning of January 31, increasing the price for the four-day event in August 2019 from £28 to £70.95. General sale tickets for the event were released at 6pm that day.

According to organisers, the £70.95 “Rainbow Pass” will give the “full Manchester Pride Festival experience featuring a line-up of international entertainment,” as well as unlimited access to the Gay Village Gathering, which runs from August 23 to 26 2019.

However, Olivia Malone, a 21-year-old student in Manchester, told PinkNews that she and her friends would no longer be able to afford to attend all the Manchester Pride festivities across the weekend.

“It’s not just increased by a few pound, it’s more than doubled,” said Malone, who has bought tickets for Manchester Pride’s festival twice before.

“I definitely think that it will prevent a lot of people being able to go, as last year I went with my friends—all of us are students— so with ticket prices like that we definitely won’t be able to afford to go, and the majority of the pride audience are younger people.”
