A lesbian couple is offering a £35,000 salary for a male nanny, or “manny,” to act as a “strong male role model” for their six-year-old daughter.

The lesbian mums from Harrogate, north Yorkshire, posted a job advert on Childcare.co.uk —the UK’s largest platform for childcare providers and parents—last week, explaining that they hope a male nanny will help their daughter “create a close bond with someone who isn’t a woman.”

The parents said that they are concerned that their child does not have enough contact with boys or men.

“We are a lesbian couple and are afraid our all-female household is starting to have a negative impact on our little girl,” the advert reads.

“Like most six-year old girls she isn’t close with many boys in her class, but we are scared this is a much larger problem, which will affect her later in life when it comes to dating, socialising and work.”

The lesbian couple added that their daughter has “minimal contact with men due to both our families living far away and no male teachers at her school.”

The advert continues: “We are afraid she’s going to become an adult and have had no male role models in her life.

“We’ve noticed she is uncomfortable around men now, hiding behind us and not speaking, and we are worried this is just going to escalate as she gets older.”

The lesbian couple are offering £35,000 for the role, which will include 20 days holiday plus bank holidays.

The male nanny is required to have a clean driving licence; a minimum of two years’ experience in nannying “or a similar role;” and first aid training.

The advert adds: “We are looking for someone who will be a strong male role model, willing to give her advice, teach her life skills and won’t be afraid to discipline her.

“She can be a little terror sometimes like most and we want someone who can put her in her place when she needs it, to build that level of respect for them.”

The lesbian parents added that candidates “must be looking for a long-term job” because they “hope to keep the successful Manny on for the foreseeable future, at least till her teenage years, so they have time to build a strong bond.”

The couple explained that they understood that they may face criticism for posting the gender-specific advert.

“We know that some people won’t agree with the reasonings behind our job offer, however we believe that in the long run it will benefit our daughter and that’s what’s important to us,” reads the advert.

Richard Conway, founder of Childcare.co.uk, which has more than two million users across the UK, described the advert is an “unusual request.”

Conway added: “However, we have lots of reliable male nannies registered to the site who will hopefully help this couple and their daughter out.

“It’s always lovely when a child makes a strong bond with their nannies and childminders and we hope this will be the case.”
