Queer Eye’s Tan France announces UK book tour

Queer Eye fashion expert Tan France is set to embark on a book tour in the UK to mark the publication of his memoir, Naturally Tan.
The fashion guru – who is a fan favourite among Queer Eye fans for his sarcastic comments and unique style – will be in conversation in London, Manchester and Birmingham later this year.
He will be speaking about his life and new memoir on Tuesday 4 June in Manchester, Wednesday 5 June in Birmingham and Thursday 6 June in London. Tickets are on sale now.
Naturally Tan: Tan France’s first book
Naturally Tan will mark France’s first book, and will be published on 16 May. The memoir will see the Queer Eye star writing about what it was like to grow up gay in a traditional Asian family in South Yorkshire as one of few people of colour in the area.

The book – which is published by Penguin – promises to bring Tan France’s “trademark wit, humour, and radical compassion” as well as looking at how he found his voice and style.
France said he book “is meant to spread joy, personal acceptance, and most of all understanding.
“Each of us is living our own private journey, and the more we know about each other, the healthier and happier the world will be.”

This is not the first time that Queer Eye’s Tan France has opened up about his experience of growing up gay and his struggle to come to terms with his sexuality.

In an interview with Shortlist last year, France said: “Being brown and gay made coming out harder.
“If I were Caucasian, I would have found the process easier. I have to battle so many issues, and the biggest is racism.”

He continued: “Being ‘out and proud’ can feel like a real luxury of Western culture, where people are often white and see existing white gay people in their culture.
“They see themselves reflected, so they feel a sense of acceptance. That’s a kind of privilege people don’t know they possess.
“I get so many emails from people in the Middle East or Africa saying, ‘Finally we’re seeing someone on our screens that we can relate to!’ Our cultures are very similar.
“They’re often very strict, conservative and shame-based.”
Tan France has developed an international fan-following after appearing on Netflix’s Queer Eye as a fashion guru, where he helps people pick out a new wardrobe.
Last year, Queer Eye won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Structured Reality Program.”
