Golden Globes 2019: LGBT winners include Bohemian Rhapsody, Killing Eve and Green Book

The Golden Globes 2019 included big wins for the LGBT+ community with big titles and actors taking the lead.

LGBT+ themed shows and films, including Killing Eve and A Very English Scandal, dominated the 76th Golden Globe Awards 2019, with Bohemian Rhapsody bagging two accolades.

Bohemian Rhapsody‘s Rami Malek bags best actor

The 2018 Queen biopic won accolades for best film drama, with lead actor Rami Malek, who played Freddie Mercury, scooping best drama actor.

It comes despite the film getting mixed reviews and amid accusations of “straightwashing.”

Green Book‘s Mahershala Ali wins best supporting actor

Comedy-drama Green Book, meanwhile, landed three gongs: best musical or comedy film; best supporting actor for Mahershala Ali; and best screenplay.

Ali portrays black, queer musician Don Shirley in the film, who embarks on a tour of America’s southern states in the era of Jim Crow laws, accompanied by his bodyguard and driver Tony Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen).

Golden Globes host Sandra Oh scores prize for Killing Eve

Sandra Oh was awarded best actress in a TV drama for her part in BBC America’s Killing Eve, which follows MI5 officer Eve Polastri and psychopathic assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer), two women who become obsessed with each other.

Oh also hosted the award ceremony, becoming the first person of Asian descent to do so.

“I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight because I wanted to be here to look out into this audience and witness this moment of change,” she said during her and co-host Andy Samberg’s opening monologue.

“This moment is real. Trust me. It is real. Because I see you [pointing to women and minorities in the audience], and I see you, all these faces of change. And now, so will everyone else,” she added.

Olivia Colman wins best actress for The Favourite

Lesbian period film The Favourite, set in 18th century England, has bagged its first award of the year.

Lead actor Olivia Colman, who plays Queen Anne, received the accolade for 2019 Golden Globes best actress for musical or comedy.

The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, is an historical comedy-drama about two cousins, played by Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, as they fight it out to be court favourites of Queen Anne, including their lesbian affairs with the monarch.

A Very English Scandal‘s Ben Whishaw wins best supporting actor

BBC mini-series A Very English Scandal also scored an award for best supporting actor in a limited series or TV movie for Ben Whishaw’s role as Norman Scott.

Whishaw dedicated the victory to Scott, whom he defined as “a true queer hero and icon.”

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story scores two awards

FX’s true crime anthology The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story won recognition for best limited series or TV movie.

The series’ lead actor Darren Criss, who played the killer of gay Italian fashion designer, won as best actor in a limited series or TV movie.

Lady Gaga wins best music for A Star is Born‘s ‘Shallow’

Bradley Cooper’s film A Star Is Born failed to win any award for its acting or directing.

But LGBT+ champion Lady Gaga triumphed in the best music category, with the duet “Shallow” winning the award.
