Fancy watching an LGBT movie on Netflix this evening? We have you covered with this list of lesbian and gay movies you should watch.

Queer cinema is on the rise but there still isn’t a whole lot of movies that feature lesbian or gay couples, especially as the main characters of a movie. Nonetheless, more and more LGBT movies are being produced each year, and you do have a good few to pick from.

Read this list for 10 great movies, seven of which you can watch tonight from Netflix. The last three movies you will have to hunt down elsewhere—but they’re worth the chase nonetheless!

Which of these gay movies will be on your screen tonight?

God’s Own Country

This 2017 British drama film has glowing reviews online. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a generous 97 percent approval rating, and IMDb granted the God’s Own Country with a rating of 7.7/10.

This romantic British film features a gay protagonist called Johnny Saxby based in Yorkshire, England. Saxby is a homosexual farmer who falls for a Romanian migrant worker.

Definitely put this award-winning drama on your watchlist if you’re looking for a good LGBT movie on Netflix.

Handsome Devil

Gay movie Handsome Devil is about an outcast who enrols into a new rugby-obsessed boarding school. But unlike most teen dramas and comedies, this LGBT movie focuses on two characters and their friendship.

The gay outsider is forced to share a room with none other than the star rugby player. What do you think will happen between the two young men in this excellent LGBT movie?

Below Her Mouth

This lesbian movie is full of sex, drama and romance between two women, Jasmine and Dallas.

It’s a known fact that there’s are less female representation in movies than male. For that reason, the director had decided to create this movie with an all-female production crew.

That’s definitely a step in a new direction for cinema. What do you think?

Alex Strangelove

Written and directed by the openly gay Craig Johnson, this LGBT movie was released in 2018.

The movie’s main character Alex is a high school student who finally loses his virginity to his long-time Claire. So far, it sounds like any other teen movie.

The twist comes when Alex forms a friendship with a gay guy and he starts questioning his sexuality.

Beach Rats

Main character Frankie, played by Harris Dickinson, is a gay 19-year-old charming young man from Brooklyn, New York.

In the gay movie, Frank experiences a dull and uninspired summer so he turned to the internet where he begins to talk with older men… you can imagine what happens next.

Empire reviewed Beach Rats and scored them a respectable 4/5. But what will you score this movie? Find it on Netflix now before it gets taken down.

The Feels

This 2017 romantic comedy movie is also available on Netflix. It’s about a lesbian engaged couple and their joint bachelorette celebrations.

The twist for the movie comes when one of the brides confesses a disheartening truth to her partner—she’s never had an orgasm.

What ever could happen next? Ooooh, we are stumped.

…. And to round this list up, we thought we’d mention some noteworthy LGBT movies that are aren’t currently on Netflix (annoying, we know), but they’re definitely worth watching. In fact, these movies are directly recommended by the PinkNews team.

Possibly the best lesbian movie, this 1999 movie stars the fabulous Natasha Lyonne, who is known for her excellent lesbian role in Orange is the New Black.

In But I’m A Cheerleader, Lyonne plays a teenager Megan who is suspected of being a lesbian despite having a boyfriend.

Her parents send her to rehab camp, and ironically, that’s where she meets a shameless teen lesbian, Graham.

Megan soon grows confused when she develops feelings for Graham.

Released this year in 2018, Rafiki is a lesbian movie about two women in Kenya.

Rafiki was banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) “due to its homosexual theme and clear intent to promote lesbianism in Kenya contrary to the law”.

The Danish Girl

Based on a book, this award-winning movie, starring Eddie Redmayne, is about an artist called Einar Wegener who prepares for his sex-change.

Wegener has the support from his wife played by Alicia Vikander, and the movie follows his transition.

This trans movie caused various controversial debates including one surrounding whether a cisgender person should play a trans role.

Nonetheless, the movie did shed light on trans issues and it was even nominated for four Oscars (with Vikander winning the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role).
